They Treated Me Like Crap But I Couldn’t Just Up And Quit
I had a little girl to feed.
And my wife didn’t make enough for me to be a stay-at-home dad.
So I toughed it out-each day more miserable than the one before.
An automotive franchise where morning management meetings were led by an abusive, nasty boss of the highest order. A guy who really believed that screaming obscenities at us would help us increase sales that day.
But, I didn’t quit.
I was fired.
I Remember That Day
The day the General Manager told me that my services were no longer needed was a tough one.
And, even though it happened toward the end of 2000, I’m still able to instantly tap into that moment like it happened yesterday.
My first feeling was one of shock. I really wasn’t expecting it to happen. Me? Fired? No way!
The next feeling I experienced was fear. Heart-racing, body-shaking fear.
And then, strangely enough, I felt a huge sense of relief. I was free from all the pain I experienced each and every day as an employee of a seriously dysfunctional company. Free from a jerk of a boss who lived inside my head for way too long. It was a wonderful feeling.
Until Mr. Fear Showed Up Again. What the hell was I going to do?
My dad wanted me to join his franchise consulting firm. Bad.
He was a franchise “consultant.” (A broker) One of the first ones in the U.S.
His job was to match those interested in becoming franchise owners to franchise concepts he represented. He had been doing it successfully since 1990.
A few days after I was fired, he asked me if I would be interested in becoming a franchise consultant with his firm. He told me there wouldn’t be a salary, but “the paydays would be large.” I thanked him for the offer, but I told him that I really needed to have a steady paycheck.
He didn’t ask me about it again for about a day.
You see, my dad was a rather persistent fellow. Like me, his background was in sales and sales management.
The title he held at his last job was Director of Franchise Development. He helped a weight-loss franchisor open 350 units. (Until the Federal Trade Commission started to crack down on weight-loss programs and products.) After the FTC came in and changed the industry he was in, he was let go. It was then that he said “no more.” He had been downsized several times over the years, and he didn’t want to experience being let go ever again. He stumbled upon something about franchise matchmaking, learned more about it, and joined a national franchise brokerage firm-he was actually one of their first franchisees. And, he thought that I would be a great fit as a franchise consultant…a matchmaker.
My wife and I talked about his offer; I was a bit more enthusiastic about it then she was, so I did the job-search thing for a couple of months. Until I didn’t.
3 months after I was fired, I attended the franchisor’s franchise consultant training class in sunny California. My dad had succeeded in convincing me to give his idea a shot.
Some Franchise Success
I had some success in my 10 or so years as a franchise consultant. (And franchisee) I received a “One To Watch” award at our national convention for the number of successful franchise matches I had made. Things were good. And, I was working for myself. It was nice not having a boss. Then things started to change.
I won’t go into details here-let’s just say that there was a change at the top of the food chain…at franchise headquarters, and I didn’t like the folks who took over as franchisors. I was able to leave relatively unscathed, and I went out on my own for a while.
I become an entrepreneur.
I wasn’t a franchisee anymore. I didn’t have to pay monthly marketing fees (for lousy marketing) and royalties to franchise headquarters anymore. I didn’t have to follow their rules. I was truly on my own, and I loved it!
“Joel, We Have A Problem”
The problem I’m about to tell you about started way before I went out on my own.
Some of my people were going out of business.
That’s right: Some of the people I helped get into business had closed their doors. They had lost their money. I felt terrible, even though I knew it wasn’t my fault. (I also had helped a lot of people become successful franchise owners) But it was the ones who were losing their money that I was focused on. All of a sudden, being a franchise consultant wasn’t feeling right. But, I still wanted to help those interested in being their own boss, get there. But, how?
I Became A Franchise Ownership Advisor
I decided to leave the franchise consulting arena. And, by doing so, I walked away from some pretty big paydays. But, I had to.
I decided to become an advisor. A paid advisor. The questions was, would people who were interested in franchise ownership pay me for my knowledge? Would they pay me to help them make good choices? Would they be interested in my real-life experiences as a franchisee and as a franchise consultant? Would I be able to make a living as a franchise ownership advisor*?
*Franchise ownership advisor was the title I came up with to describe what I did-what I do.
I make a pretty good living as an advisor. I don’t make as much as I did when I was a franchise consultant, but I sleep good at night. I’m able to share what I know about franchise ownership. The good, the bad, and the ugly. I know why some people succeed as franchise owners and others don’t. And since I’m not paid a commission by the franchisors, my clients really win because my advice is unbiased. And…
Being an advisor has opened up doors for me that may have never appeared.
